As technology, culture and politics evolve, we\u2019re faced with the challenge of trying to find new words to describe all these changes. So, every few months, dictionaries like the <a href=\"http:\/\/public.oed.com\/the-oed-today\/recent-updates-to-the-oed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oxford English Dictionary (OED)<\/a> have to add hundreds of new terms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Are you a part of the <strong><em>gig economy<\/em><\/strong>? Do you follow <strong><em>POTUS<\/em><\/strong> or <strong><em>FLOTUS<\/em><\/strong> on Twitter? Bait is the food you attach to a hook when you go fishing. It\u2019s just a coincidence, of course, that this adjective is listed here after POTUS.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 25px;\"><strong>Echo chamber (n.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Definition: <em>An environment in which a person encounters only beliefs or opinions that coincide with their own<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">When we use social media, we tend to create our own little worlds. Your friends are your friends because you share similar values. It makes sense then that you publish and share posts with similar ideas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">So, on the night of the election results, it can be quite a shock to discover that half the country has some very different ideas!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 25px;\"><strong>Youthquake (n.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Definition: A significant cultural, political, or social change arising from the actions or influence of young people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">\u2018Youthquake\u2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2017\/dec\/15\/youthquake-named-2017-word-of-the-year-by-oxford-dictionaries\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OED\u2019s word of 2017<\/a>, is typically used to describe the increased engagement and participation of young people in politics. It looks and sounds a lot like \u2018earthquake\u2019, which gives a sense of destruction, disruption and change.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>Changing societies<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 25px;\"><strong>Gig economy (n.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Definition: <em>A labour market characterized by the prevalence of short-term contracts or freelance work as opposed to permanent jobs<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">\u2018Gig\u2019 is a strange one. It usually refers to some kind of live performance by a musician or band.
