Organized between the 15th and 21st of August, the <em>barrio<\/em>\u2019s <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>lavishly<\/strong><\/em><\/span> decorated streets and the festival\u2019s many activities await locals and foreigners, families and groups of friends alike.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">But where does this unique 200-year-old tradition come from? We\u2019ve put together a short history lesson about the Gr\u00e0cia Festival, complete with a guide to everything it has in store for visitors this year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>The history of the Gr\u00e0cia Festival<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">The week-long street festival has its roots in the 19th century. It was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barcelonacheckin.com\/en\/r\/barcelona_tourism_guide\/festivals\/gracia-festival.php\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first celebrated in 1817<\/a>, starting on August 15, the Day of the Assumption of Mary. This day still marks the official <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>commencement<\/strong><\/em><\/span> of the festivities each year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">At the time, Gr\u00e0cia was still an independent town (until its <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>annexation<\/strong><\/em><\/span> by Barcelona in 1897), and its inhabitants decorated the streets in a spectacular fashion, with handmade ornaments and works of important artists.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">In the past 200 years, the festival has evolved in many ways. During the year 1975, for a brief moment, it even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barcelonacheckin.com\/en\/r\/barcelona_tourism_guide\/festivals\/gracia-festival.php\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">became a politicized event<\/a>, celebrating democracy and Catalan culture during the oppression of Franco.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Its religious aspect has faded to make way for a more <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>secular<\/strong><\/em><\/span>, mainstream festival that attracts locals and tourists alike. Every year, the streets of Gr\u00e0cia are adorned with handmade decorations made from recycled materials. Each street (22 of them are taking part this year) picks its own theme and tries to \u201c<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>out-decorate<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u201d the others to win the title of the most uniquely decorated street in Gr\u00e0cia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Scenes from a magical underwater world, the age of dinosaurs, the Roman Empire, the hippie movement of the sixties, a fairytale world of dragons and princesses and more wonders come alive in the narrow streets. You may find yourself walking into a papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 jungle or a spaceship made of plastic bottles at any given moment.
