We\u2019ll also share with you some tricks and tips for passing this part of the exam. In these texts, writers share information, guides and opinions on specific topics. The idea is to write in a way that grabs the reader&#8217;s attention and keeps them interested until the very end.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">In the Cambridge B2 First Writing Paper &#8211; part 2, you could be asked to write about a variety of topics. However, it\u2019s often something you\u2019ve recently learned to do or know a lot about. If you do that, you\u2019ve missed an essential stage: planning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">You can compare writing an article to preparing your favourite meal. No good tortilla de patatas was ever made without carefully preparing the ingredients first. It\u2019s exactly the same with your writing &#8211; only, you\u2019ll need fewer onions. <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>Time management<\/strong><\/em><\/span> is also important. You only have about 40 minutes total so you need to plan your time carefully.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Here\u2019s how to do it:<\/p>\n<p>&nsbp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>Step 1: Make a plan (10 minutes)<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #616a6b;\"><strong>Think about the question<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Really focus on the question. Decide who your role model is. Is he or she a sporting hero you really admire? Or someone closer to home? Think about why they inspire you and make some notes on your ideas.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #616a6b;\"><strong>Think about the tone<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Consider the best blogs you read on the internet. Are they relaxed and friendly? Or do they sound like boring school essays? The truth is most articles are quite conversational. They are somewhere between semi-formal and informal. They are often informative, whilst entertaining and engaging the reader. You can also try to add some <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>humour<\/strong><\/em><\/span> in too!<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #616a6b;\"><strong>Think about the structure<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Structuring your article is key and there\u2019s normally more than one way to do it. Decide which structure makes sense for the question. Try to keep it logical and include different ideas in different paragraphs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Here\u2019s an example structure:<\/p>\n<div class=\"list_styles\"><ul class=''>\n<span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li><i class='icon-caret-right'><\/i>Paragraph 1 Introduction\nStart with a catchy opening line to hook the readers. Then introduce your role model.<\/li>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li><i class='icon-caret-right'><\/i>Paragraph 2 &#8211; Describe what makes them special\nGiving examples and developing your answer.<\/li>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li><i class='icon-caret-right'><\/i>Paragraph 3 &#8211; Why you chose them as your role model\nThis should be like a conclusion and give the reader a lasting comment or a question to think about.<\/li>\n<\/span>\n<\/ul><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Note: For many articles four paragraphs will be more appropriate &#8211; it depends on the question you are given.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Linkers are a fantastic way to organise your ideas. Experiment with some of these in your next article:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><em>For a start&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><em>Not to mention&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><em>On top of that&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><em>So&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">*Remember, you don\u2019t need headings or titles in the article it should read as one continuous piece of work. <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #616a6b;\"><strong>Think about vocabulary<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Brainstorming vocabulary is a great way to get your ideas <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>flowing<\/strong><\/em><\/span>. What are some great words related to the topic? List some adjectives for being a good role model. Pick out some verbs related to motivation or any good nouns or collocations you think would work. You can be a lot more familiar with the reader addressing them personally with pronouns like \u2018you\u2019 and \u2018I\u2019. Give your own opinion and also use contractions. Here are some more ways to sound personal:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><em>Have you ever wondered&#8230;?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><em>I\u2019m sure you can imagine&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><em>Can you believe&#8230;?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><em>I will never forget&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><em>There\u2019s nothing more amazing than&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><em>If you ask me&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>Step Two: Write it (25 minutes)<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">An interesting introduction is the key to a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>first-rate<\/strong><\/em><\/span> article. You want to capture your audience\u2019s attention whilst making it clear what it\u2019s going to be about. Start with an opening line that sets the tone of the topic. Try to catch the attention from the first word. Here\u2019s an example:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><em>Firefighters and superheroes are obvious role models. But sometimes the person that inspires us the most is so much closer to home. I have never had a favourite singer or sports star but my father has always been an important inspiration for me.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Next, think about the original question. What makes your role model special? Remember to keep it interesting and include some personal feelings. Use <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>exclamation marks<\/strong><\/em><\/span> like this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><em>One of the things that makes my father so special is that he always does everything for his family, and he\u2019s an excellent listener too. Whenever we have a problem he\u2019s always there for us. Not to mention the fact that he\u2019s also really fun-loving! If there\u2019s a party, my dad is the first person on the dancefloor.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">But only include one or two exclamation marks in the article or they\u2019ll lose their impact.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Finally you want to <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><em><strong>tackle<\/strong><\/em><\/span> the last question. Why did you choose him as your role model? A great technique here would be to address your reader personally and even include a rhetorical question at the end. This gives them something to think about. A little bit like this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><em>I think my father is the best role model because he is the most hardworking person I know. He has a really difficult job as a doctor and is always saving lives. That\u2019s so inspiring for me!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><em>I really look up to him and he really pushes me to be the best I can be. Wouldn\u2019t you want a role model like my dad?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>Step Three: Check it (5 minutes)<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Everything has come together and you\u2019ve got your final article. Now you can sit back, relax and put your feet up until the examiner says stop. Wait, not quite!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">You\u2019re missing the last important step. Always check your writing. You\u2019d hate for all your hard work to be wasted at the last moment.
