It\u2019s a day to celebrate Europe\u2019s rich linguistic diversity and show the importance of language learning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">European languages are all special in their own way but did you know they often borrow words from each other? Perhaps the biggest <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">mongrel<\/span><\/em> of them all is English, which has been borrowing words from its modern European neighbours for centuries &#8211; from \u2018cafe\u2019 to \u2018waltz\u2019 to \u2018siesta.\u2019 English is full of <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">loanwords<\/span><\/em> like these!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">English also has the same roots as other European languages, so let&#8217;s take a look at the history and find out how it became such a <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">melting pot <\/span><\/em>of words.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">For a quick summary of English\u2019s linguistic history &#8211; take a look at this video:<\/p>\n<div class=\"element_size_\"><iframe title=\"Where did English come from? - Claire Bowern\" width=\"870\" height=\"489\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YEaSxhcns7Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><strong>The history of European languages and their influences on English<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>Proto-Indo-European<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">We can <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">trace<\/span><\/em> the majority of languages in Europe back to the same root &#8211; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient.eu\/Indo-European_Languages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Proto-Indo-European language<\/a>. This was spoken about 6,000 years ago in Russia. Like a tree, Proto-Indo-European divides into different branches. The three biggest branches are Germanic, Romance and Slavic. With Hellenic (Greek), Baltic, Albanian, Indo-Aryan and Celtic making up smaller branches.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Let\u2019s see how this looks in reality: take the word \u2018two\u2019, for example. How do you say \u2018two\u2019 in your language? Is it completely different to English? Yes? Well, <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">not so fast<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Look at how the word has evolved from Proto-Indo-European to todays\u2019 languages. We can see that all the variations came from the same origin:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/languagelearning\/comments\/ccques\/how_the_word_two_evolved_from_protoindoeuropean\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Proto-Indo-European-languages-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"870\" height=\"669\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-44810\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Proto-Indo-European-languages-1.png 870w, https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Proto-Indo-European-languages-1-300x231.png 300w, https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Proto-Indo-European-languages-1-768x591.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>Germanic languages and their influence on English<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">The Germanic languages include the West Germanic languages; English, German, Frisian, Dutch and Yiddish. It also includes the North Germanic languages; Danish, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">The invasions of Britain from the Angles, Saxons and Jutes in the 5th and 6th centuries, mean a lot of English words are Germanic. They often refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collinsdictionary.com\/word-lovers-blog\/word-origins\/anglo-saxon-words,7,HCB.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">everyday common things<\/a> such as \u2018cow\u2019, \u2018house\u2019, \u2018bread\u2019 and \u2018sword\u2019. Britain was also invaded by the Vikings in 800AD who spoke a language which would develop into Norwegian and Danish. They also brought new words such as \u2018you\u2019, \u2018anger\u2019 and \u2018husband\u2019.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>Romance Languages and their influence on English<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">The Romance languages include the five major languages; Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, French and Romanian. They also include Catalan, Galician, Sardinian and Venetian.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Norman-Conquest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Norman invasion<\/a> of Britain in the year 1066AD brought over French and Latin words relating to government, aristocracy and royalty. This is when words such as \u2018council\u2019, \u2018marriage\u2019 and \u2018parliament\u2019 entered the English language. There was even a moment in Britain where although the <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">peasants<\/span><\/em> spoke everyday common Anglo-Saxon English, the upper-class spoke French. They include; Ukranian, Belarusian, Russian, Czech, Polish, Bulgarian, Serbian, Slovenian, Croatian and Bosnian.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Compared to the Germanic and Romance languages, very few English words come from Russian and other Slavic languages. However, there are some <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">cognates<\/span><\/em> that exist, for example \u2018mother\u2019 in English is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gmjHfOklXL8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018\u043c\u0430\u0442\u044c\u2019<\/a> in Russian. \u2018Cafe\u2019 is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordhippo.com\/what-is\/the\/russian-word-for-984e18fe201c8f99e0e443707464d5b5ffaf326a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018\u041a\u0430\u0444\u0435\u2019<\/a> and \u2018airport\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=laJjFWumMso\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018\u0430\u044d\u0440\u043e\u043f\u043e\u0301\u0440\u0442\u2019<\/a>.<br \/>\nFind out more about <a href=\"https:\/\/therussianblog.wordpress.com\/2012\/03\/21\/the-russian-that-you-already-know-cognates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russian cognates<\/a> and learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/language\/articles\/europeanlanguagecomparison.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cognates in other European languages<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>Non-Proto-Indo-European languages<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">It\u2019s also worth mentioning that there are some languages in Europe that don\u2019t fit into the Proto-Indo-European family. These include Basque, Finnish, Estonian and Hungarian.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Basque is particularly interesting as it is one of the world\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/k-international.com\/blog\/oldest-living-languages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">oldest living languages<\/a> and is supposed to be <a href=\"https:\/\/matadornetwork.com\/abroad\/9-of-the-hardest-languages-for-english-speakers-to-learn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one of the hardest languages<\/a> for English speakers to learn. It is not officially related to any other language but there are some recent theories that it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/travel\/story\/20190603-the-surprising-story-of-the-basque-language\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has similarities to Armenian<\/a> and also possibly has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizkaiatalent.eus\/en\/pais-vasco-te-espera\/senas-de-identidad\/euskera-antigua-europa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">neolithic roots<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Modern European languages and English<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">English has continued to evolve with modern-day Germanic, Romance and Slavic languages. This is thanks to cultural influences of food, science, technology, entertainment and most importantly &#8211; <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">loanwords<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Loanwords<\/span><\/em> are words taken from one language and used in another when there is no existing suitable word to describe something. They may sound like they are borrowed but English shows no signs of giving them back. Instead they have adopted them as part of their own rich <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">tapestry<\/span><\/em>!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Take a look at these examples of loanwords from modern European languages.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>German<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 13px;\"><em>Naval terms such as \u2018dock\u2019 often come from Dutch because of their tradition as sailors during the Middle Ages<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>Scandinavian<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;
