We\u2019re about to enter the danger zone of the Cambridge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgeenglish.org\/exams-and-tests\/advanced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">C1 Advanced<\/a> exam &#8211; Reading and Use of English Part 4. That\u2019s right, this is the most feared part of the written test. Students <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">groan<\/span><\/em> when they hear it mentioned. And they\u2019ll often say it\u2019s their worst part.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">It may be difficult, but it\u2019s definitely worth giving it your best shot. There are two marks up for grabs for each question. And with the right technique and lots of practice, you\u2019ll soon <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">get the hang of it<\/span><\/em>. Believe it or not, It can actually be quite fun.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">How do I get to that stage? Well, we\u2019re here to help. We\u2019ll take you step by step through Part 4. We\u2019ll teach you what to expect in the exam, and how to answer the question. Then, we\u2019ll finish off with some tips and resources for success. Sound good? Okay, let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>What\u2019s in Part 4?<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Also known as Key Word Transformations, in this part you are given 6 pairs of sentences to complete. <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Bear in mind<\/span><\/em>, students often find Part 4 one of the most challenging, so we recommend you dedicate about ten minutes to this section. Remember, you are given 90 minutes in total for the whole Reading and Use of English paper.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Each pair of sentences in Part 4 has a lead-in sentence, and a second one which contains a gap. You must complete the gapped sentence with between three to six words, so that it has a similar meaning to the first.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Here\u2019s an example from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgeenglish.org\/exams-and-tests\/advanced\/preparation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">C1 Advanced sample paper<\/a> on the Cambridge Assessment English website.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-45316\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1cuadro.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1cuadro.png 602w, https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1cuadro-300x58.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">There\u2019s also a key word in bold that you have to use. That\u2019s why it\u2019s called a key word transformation. Note, the keyword must not be changed. So if you take the word \u2018nearly\u2019, you cannot then change it to \u2018near\u2019. <strong>It must stay exactly the same<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">As we\u2019ve already mentioned, each question is worth two marks. It\u2019s always worth trying to answer because you can still get one point, even if you only get part of the sentence correct.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Take a look at how the above question would be marked. You get one mark for DOES NOT EARN and then a second mark for NEARLY SO\/AS. You\u2019ll also notice that sometimes there are two correct answers NEARLY SO or NEARLY AS.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-45319\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2cuadro.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"119\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2cuadro.png 602w, https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2cuadro-300x59.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 100px;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>What are they testing me on in this part of the exam?<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Part 4 may seem like random sentences designed to make your head explode. But there\u2019s actually a lot of logic behind them. Here\u2019s what Cambridge Assessment English are looking for:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><strong>Paraphrasing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">They are testing you on your ability to paraphrase. In other words, can you say the same thing in a different way using synonyms? Or can you accurately change the grammatical structure from active to passive?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><strong>Grammar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Luckily for you, Part 4 tests you on some set grammar points. This makes it easier to prepare for. They could test your knowledge of gerund and infinitives, reported speech, active and passive constructions, conditionals, wishes, perfect tenses or causative have. You can expect to see any C1 level grammar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><strong>Vocabulary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Part 4 also examines you on a wide range of vocabulary. This includes your knowledge of phrasal verbs, collocations, dependent prepositions, fixed expressions and idioms. Again, they\u2019re seeing how advanced your English really is. So make sure you\u2019ve got a lot of vocabulary <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">under your belt<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Take a look at this example from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgeenglish.org\/exams-and-tests\/advanced\/preparation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">C1 Advanced sample paper<\/a> on the Cambridge Assessment English website.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-45325\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/3cuadro.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/3cuadro.png 602w, https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/3cuadro-300x62.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">The clue here is the keyword \u2018on\u2019. This is a <strong>dependent preposition<\/strong> which needs a specific verb to come before it. The only verb which fits that means \u2018would only\u2019 is \u2018insisted\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">They also expect you to know that prepositions are followed by the <strong>gerund<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">So in this case, the answer would be:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-45328\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/4cuadro.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/4cuadro.png 602w, https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/4cuadro-300x61.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>How should I answer the question?<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">It\u2019s easy to <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">rush through<\/span><\/em> the questions if you don\u2019t think you can answer them. But if you follow these five simple steps, you can easily break them down into manageable <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">chunks<\/span><\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"list_styles\"><ul class='decimal'>\n<span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><strong>1. Read the first sentence carefully, then compare it with the second.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Look at what\u2019s missing. Many students like to cross out the text that appears in both. That way you\u2019re left with just the information you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-45331\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/5cuadro.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/5cuadro.png 602w, https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/5cuadro-300x61.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><strong>2. Take a look at the <u>keyword<\/u>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Does it form part of a phrasal verb, collocation or idiom that could be used to make the missing information? Is it a synonym for one of the words in the lead-in sentence?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><strong>3. Think about the grammar.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Do I need to use modal verbs? If the keyword is \u2018have\u2019, could it be followed by a participle or used in the structure &#8211; have + something + participle? What are the verb patterns? Should any of the verbs be negative? Is there a conjunction needed?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><strong>4. Write your sentence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Once you\u2019ve thought about your answer analytically, have a go at writing it. Make sure it\u2019s between three and six words.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Warning! Contractions are also counted separately. So \u2018don\u2019t\u2019 for example, would be worth two words &#8211; \u2018do\u2019 and \u2018not\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Remember, if you <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\">get stuck<\/span><\/em> on a question you can always leave it and come back to it at the end.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><strong>5. Check it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Probably the most important thing to check is if the sentences match. Make sure they have the same meaning and are also in the same tense. For example, if the first sentence is in the past, is the second one in the past too?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Don\u2019t forget to check the usual punctuation and spelling. (But you already know that!)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/span>\n<\/ul><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>Tips for studying and resources<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<div class=\"list_styles\"><ul class=''>\n<span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li><i class='icon-ok'><\/i>First thing\u2019s first, ensure sure you\u2019ve covered all the necessary grammar and vocabulary at C1 level. It helps to write a list of grammatical structures as you\u2019re learning them. And keep a record of any new phrasal verbs, collocations and idioms.<\/li>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li><i class='icon-ok'><\/i>Do lots of sample practice papers under timed conditions.
