We\u2019re here to help give you that extra bit of help you get the best mark possible. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Read on to find out how to do your Reading and Use of English Part 8, as well as some extra tips and resources for passing the Advanced exam.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>What\u2019s in part 8?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Part 8 consists of one page of text \u2013 a single text, a text in sections or several short texts \u2013 with 10 multiple-matching questions or prompts. The text(s) will all be connected to the same theme.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">You need to read the text and match the sections, which are usually labelled a, b, c, d and so on, to their <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>corresponding<\/strong><\/span><\/em> questions or prompts. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">You can use each text more than once to answer the questions and one mark is awarded for each correct answer. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Passing-C1-Advanced-Part-8.-Reading-and-Use-of-English_Oxfordhousebcn.png\" alt=\"Passing C1 Advanced Part 8. Read the questions or prompts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">While in other parts we recommend that you read the main text first, in Part 8 we suggest a different method. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"Here, it\u2019s important to first read through the 10 questions or prompts and underline any key words or phrases in each. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sample-paper-1-3_Passing-C1-Advanced-Part-8.-Reading-and-Use-of-English_Oxfordhousebcn.png\" alt=\"Sample paper 1-3_Passing C1 Advanced Part 8. Skim read the text<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">After familiarising yourself with the questions and what specific information they\u2019re looking for, <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>go ahead<\/strong><\/span><\/em> and skim read the main body of text. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">This is so you can get a general idea of what the text contains and how it relates to the main theme and questions or prompts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><strong>3. Read the first passage in more detail<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Now you\u2019ve got a better <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>grasp<\/strong><\/span><\/em> of the text, go back and look at the first passage i.e. passage A, in more detail. While you\u2019re doing this, look at the key words or phrases you\u2019ve underlined in the questions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">This way you can see if there are any synonyms or similar words and phrases that might link to a particular question. Remember that the exact words from the questions or prompts won\u2019t be in the text, but rather it\u2019ll be paraphrased \u2013 so look for similar meanings expressed with different vocabulary!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">If you find that passage A links with one of the questions or prompts, write \u2018A\u2019 in the answer box provided. It\u2019s also a good idea to underline the section of the text that you think corresponds to the question. This will help when you\u2019re checking your answers later as you\u2019ll be able to find the information easily.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><strong>4. Continue with the rest of the passages <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Now go ahead and do the same for the remaining passages. Remember, when reading the passages in more detail, keep checking back to the underlined keywords in the questions or prompts to see if there are matches in ideas. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">When you\u2019ve finished, if you see that you\u2019ve written more than one letter next to a question, go back and review the parts of text that you have underlined \u2013 make a decision and <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>cross out<\/strong><\/span><\/em> the incorrect answer!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><strong>5. Have a final read through <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">If you finish with a few spare minutes, take some time to have a final read through. This should be easy now as you\u2019ve underlined the sentences in the text that you think correspond to each question. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>Tips and resources<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"list_styles\"><ul class=''>\n<span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li><i class='icon-ok'><\/i><strong>Answer all the question:<\/strong> There is no negative marking in Cambridge English exams. So if you <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>run out of<\/strong><\/span><\/em> time or really aren\u2019t able to answer the question \u2013 have a <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>guess<\/strong><\/span><\/em>!<\/li>\n<\/span>\n<\/ul><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"list_styles\"><ul class=''>\n<span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li><i class='icon-ok'><\/i><strong>Time management:<\/strong> You only have 90 minutes to complete the whole Reading and Use of English paper. We recommend spending about 30 minutes on the first four parts and the remaining hour on Parts 5\u20138. You should therefore spend about 15 minutes on Part 8.<\/li>\n<\/span>\n<\/ul><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"list_styles\"><ul class=''>\n<span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li><i class='icon-ok'><\/i><strong>Practise paraphrasing:<\/strong> Pick out some sentences from a newspaper, write them down and then try and reword them in a different way.
