What are modal verbs? They are not quite<\/strong><\/span><\/em> the same as regular verbs such as play<\/em>, walk<\/em> and swim<\/em>. Modal verbs are a type of auxiliary verb<\/strong><\/span><\/em>, which go before the main verb, and help to show a function such as permission, probability, ability and obligation. <\/p>\n

Modal verbs can be tricky<\/strong><\/span><\/em> at first \u2013 but they don\u2019t need to be. Today we\u2019re going to look at four different types, and some examples for each. We\u2019ll also share some fun videos to help you practise! <\/p>\n

Which verbs are modal verbs?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Let\u2019s take a look at some of the most common examples of modal verbs: <\/p>\n

Other examples include: ought to, dare to, need not or had better which are slightly<\/strong><\/span><\/em> less common.<\/p>\n

With modal verbs we must use the structure: modal verb + infinitive (without to)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Modals of deduction<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Modal verbs of deduction, also known as modal verbs of certainty or probability, are used to show how sure we are of something.<\/p>\n

  • <\/i>Must<\/strong> shows us that we are very sure that something is true<\/strong>:<\/li>\n

  • <\/i>Might<\/strong>, may<\/strong> or could<\/strong> show us that we are not very sure that something is true<\/strong>:<\/li>\n
