Last year we introduced you to the words you\u2019d most likely need to know in 2021<\/a>. Now, we\u2019re bringing you the ones making it to the dictionary in 2022!<\/p>\n

Read on to find out the top 8 new English words to know for going forward into the new year.<\/p>\n

1. Virtual fashion <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Definition<\/strong>: the design and sale of fashion clothing and accessories for virtual platforms and avatars<\/p>\n

Fashion brands are starting to come into the digital world with entire collections that are only virtual. For instance, Italian fashion house Moschino teamed up with Sims<\/a> to create a set of designs just for Sims avatars. <\/p>\n

While you may think it strange, this innovation is being praised<\/strong><\/span><\/em> by people around the world. This is because it could lead to a reduction in fast fashion and a move toward a more sustainable fashion industry. <\/p>\n

How do you use it?<\/strong> <\/p>\n

I love the new virtual fashion that you bought for your Sims avatars \u2013 it\u2019s really cool!<\/em><\/p>\n

2. Metaverse <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Definition<\/strong>: a virtual reality space in which users can interact with a computer-generated environment and other users<\/p>\n

This is one word you\u2019re likely to hear a lot in 2022 thanks to Mark Zuckerberg. First mentioned in a science fiction novel in 1992 \u2013 the metaverse is a digital reality that combines aspects of social media, gaming, augmented reality<\/strong><\/span><\/em> (AR), virtual reality (VR), and cryptocurrencies to let people interact virtually.<\/p>\n

Essentially, it offers the chance for you to \u2018live\u2019 within a digital universe. You\u2019ll be able to play, learn, shop, game and more, all from the comfort of your own home!<\/p>\n

I spent a few hours hanging out with friends in the metaverse on Sunday.<\/em><\/p>\n

3. Crowdfunding <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Definition<\/strong>: getting funding (e.g. for a new business) by asking for contributions from a large number of people, especially from the online community<\/p>\n

A compound word made up of \u2018crowd\u2019 and \u2018funding,\u2019 this concept has taken off<\/strong><\/span><\/em> in recent times. Crowdfunding platforms include Kickstarter<\/a> (for businesses) and GoFundMe<\/a> (for fundraisers and individuals). They\u2019re used widely and are growing in popularity!<\/p>\n

She used a crowdfunding website to fund her new business and raised a lot of money.<\/em><\/p>\n

4. ASMR <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Definition<\/strong>: autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is a relaxing, often sedative sensation that people feel on their skin; often caused by sound<\/p>\n

ASMR has been gaining popularity on YouTube in recent years. It involves making soft sounds and noises such as whispers<\/strong><\/span><\/em>, crackles and tapping in an attempt to trigger tingling sensations in the person listening.<\/p>\n

I usually listen to ASMR before I go to bed. It\u2019s so relaxing it helps me fall asleep.<\/em><\/p>\n

5. Finfluencer <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Definition<\/strong>: a specific type of influencer who focuses on money-related topics<\/p>\n

By now, we\u2019ve all heard of influencers \u2013 those who influence people to buy products on social media \u2013 but you might not have heard of ‘finfluencers’ just yet.<\/p>\n

These are the people who are talking about money on social media. Whether it\u2019s advice on investing, clearing debt or guidance on how to make money using social networks, they\u2019re there to offer tips and help solve your financial worries.<\/p>\n

A finfluencer helped me find out which are the best businesses to invest in this year.<\/em><\/p>\n

6. Gig worker <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Definition<\/strong>: a person who works temporary jobs typically in the service sector as an independent contractor or freelancer<\/p>\n

Although this phrase has been around for a while, it\u2019s only just making it to the dictionary! That\u2019s most likely because it\u2019s becoming more prevalent<\/strong><\/span><\/em> around the world.<\/p>\n

Gig workers may be independent contractors, online platform workers, contract firm workers, on-call workers or temporary workers. Often, they\u2019ll do work for \u2018on-demand\u2019 companies as and when the companies need it.<\/p>\n

My brother\u2019s a gig worker – sometimes he has multiple projects at once, and sometimes he doesn\u2019t have any work!<\/em><\/p>\n

7. Co-working <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Definition<\/strong>: the act of workers from different companies coming together to share a space to work in<\/p>\n

Like \u2018gig worker\u2019 this term isn\u2019t new but it\u2019s just making it to the dictionary. A very popular way of working for anyone who is a freelancer or digital gig worker but doesn\u2019t want to work alone, co-working is the answer! <\/p>\n

Co-working spaces are popping up<\/strong><\/span><\/em> in cities around the world and provide people with similar facilities to that of an office. For instance, many of them offer desks, kitchen equipment, water tanks and meeting rooms.<\/p>\n

How do you use it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was tired of working alone so I joined a co-working space where I can work with other people in the same situation<\/em>.<\/p>\n

8. Staycation <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Definition<\/strong>: a holiday in your home country rather than abroad<\/p>\n

Staycations are becoming popular as a result of travel restrictions caused by the pandemic. With many foreign holidays cancelled, people instead have chosen to organise local holidays.<\/p>\n

Whether it\u2019s to a city, park, festival or other local attraction, holidays and events at home have surged<\/strong><\/span><\/em> in the last 12 months earning this phrase a place in the dictionary.<\/p>\n

This year we decided on a staycation as our trip abroad was cancelled!<\/em><\/p>\n
