In fact, we think the speaking section is one of the best parts of the test to do \u2013 it\u2019s short, covers interesting topics and gives you the opportunity to really show off your English skills! <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">In this short guide, we\u2019ll explain how to get top marks in the IELTS speaking section, as well as offer useful language and some top tips for test day. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>The IELTS test<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">If you want to travel, study or work abroad, then you\u2019ll need to <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>prove<\/strong><\/span><\/em> your English language level. The answer \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/en\/why-ielts\/\">the IELTS test<\/a>! This English test provides you with a certificate that is recognised by employers and universities around the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">There are two types of <a href=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/en\/the-difference-between-ielts-general-and-ielts-academic\/\">IELTS tests \u2013 Academic and General<\/a>. While the Academic test is ideal for students who want to study in an English-speaking country, the General test is more suitable for those looking for work opportunities. Both consist of four parts \u2013 reading, writing, listening and speaking. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Yet, the speaking part of the exam is the same for both General and Academic, so whichever one you\u2019re doing, this guide will help you to succeed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>The IELTS speaking section <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">The IELTS Speaking test takes around 11 to 14 minutes and is divided into three different sections. In this test you\u2019re being assessed on your ability to: <\/p>\n<div class=\"list_styles\"><ul class=''>\n<span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li><i class='icon-ok'><\/i>communicate opinions and information on everyday topics and common experiences. <\/li>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li><i class='icon-ok'><\/i>speak at length on a particular topic using appropriate language while organising ideas coherently.<\/li>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li><i class='icon-ok'><\/i>express and justify opinions and to analyse, discuss and speculate.<\/li>\n<\/span>\n<\/ul><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Let\u2019s take a closer look at each part now. <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #4d524d;\"><strong>Speaking part 1\u200d<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">The IELTS Speaking Part 1 section is the introduction and short interview which lasts for around 4 to 5 minutes. Here, the examiner introduces themselves to you and asks you to introduce yourself and to confirm your identity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Next, they\u2019ll ask you a few general questions on familiar topics such as home, family, work, studies and your interests. In this section, the examiner will give you a task card which asks you to talk about a particular topic. This card also includes points you can cover as part of the talk if you wish.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">You will be given one minute to prepare your talk \u2013 you can use a pencil and piece of paper to <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>note down<\/strong><\/span><\/em> ideas. Then, you\u2019ll talk for 1 to 2 minutes about the topic. For this part, the examiner may ask you further questions about the topic you talked about in Part 2. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">These questions are designed to give you an opportunity to discuss more abstract issues and ideas. Here you can really <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>show off<\/strong><\/span><\/em> your vocabulary and grammatical structures. Use an expression like \u2018Let me see\u2019 or \u2018I\u2019ve never thought about that, but\u2026\u2019. If you do this, you\u2019ll <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>be on track<\/strong><\/span><\/em> to get a good band score. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>Tips to get top marks<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><strong>Read the task card carefully<\/strong>: Before you do part 2, it\u2019s vital that you use your minute of preparation to read the task card carefully. This is to make sure that there are no misunderstandings when you start speaking!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><strong>Use a variety of language<\/strong>: In all parts, you\u2019re being tested on your ability to use a variety of language and grammatical structures. Make sure you show off your language skills to the examiner by including language such as phrasal verbs, idioms, linking phrases, comparisons and contrasts etc. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\"><strong>Practice makes perfect<\/strong>: Practise as much as you possibly can before test day!
