Well, if you live in Barcelona you have lots of opportunities to do just that! Whether you go up the coast to a little beachside town or you brave the crowds<\/strong><\/span><\/em> on the city beach, you\u2019ll be sure to catch a suntan and shake off<\/strong><\/span><\/em> all the stress of the week.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve probably noticed it\u2019s getting hotter in the city. Summer is officially here on the 21st of June – and we want to help you cooling off<\/strong><\/span><\/em>make the most of it!<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why we\u2019ve put together this list of our 10 favourite summer-themed English Idioms for you to practise while you\u2019re on your break! <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1. Beach bum<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t be such a beach bum<\/em><\/strong> this year, there are so many other things we can do in the summer!\u201d<\/p>\n

A beach bum<\/strong> is a person who does nothing but spend time on the beach.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

2. A ray of sunshine<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

  <\/p>\n

\u201cSarah started work last week and she\u2019s such a ray of sunshine<\/strong><\/em>. Everyone is so happy!\u201d<\/p>\n

When we use \u201ca ray of sunshine\u201d<\/strong> to describe a person, it means they are a nice, positive and friendly person.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

3. Make hay while the sun shines<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

  <\/p>\n

\u201cThere are so many tourists here! It\u2019s time to open our restaurant and make hay while the sun shines<\/strong><\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n

The expression means you should make money when the conditions are right. Hay is dried grass that horses and other animals eat. <\/p>\n

4. Take a shine to someone<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

  <\/p>\n

\u201cMy son has taken a shine<\/strong><\/em> to our new babysitter. All he does is talk about her!\u201d<\/p>\n

Taking a shine<\/strong> to someone means to like someone a lot.<\/p>\n

5. Everything under the sun<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

  <\/p>\n

\u201cI never pack light. When we go on holiday, I pack everything under the sun<\/strong><\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n

Everything under the sun<\/strong> literally means everything that exists on earth or in other words \u2018a lot\u2019! <\/p>\n

6. A place in the sun<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

  <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so pleased for Igor, after so many years working in the lab he\u2019s finally found his place in the sun<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

This expression means to be in a strong or advantageous position.<\/p>\n

7. A fairweather friend<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

  <\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as I lost my job Roberto stopped calling me. He\u2019s such a fair-weather friend<\/strong><\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n

A fair-weather friend<\/strong> is a person who is only there for you in the good times.<\/p>\n

8. Bury your head in the sand<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

  <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a serious problem Brenda and we have to deal with it now. Don\u2019t bury your head in the sand<\/strong><\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n

If you bury your head in the sand<\/strong>, you ignore a problem and hope it will go away.<\/p>\n

9. Bring sand to the beach<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

  <\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve brought your own ice cream to the ice cream festival? Come on Danny, don\u2019t bring sand to the beach<\/strong><\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n

Bringing sand to the beach<\/strong> means to do something unnecessary or redundant.<\/p>\n

10. Travel on a shoestring<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

  <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been to 50 countries all over the world and met thousands of people – all on a shoestring<\/strong><\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n

To travel on a shoestring<\/strong> means to travel very cheaply – or with hardly any money.<\/p>\n
