Have you been having sleepless nights thinking about what might appear on the writing exam? Do you need some tips to help you with your planning? If you\u2019ve answered \u2018yes\u2019 to any of the previous questions, fear not \u2013 we\u2019re here to help!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">The review is just one of the options in Writing Part 2.  However, you can\u2019t guarantee which ones will be on the paper on exam day. Also, it\u2019s not just the structure that\u2019s important. If the topic really <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>takes your fancy<\/strong><\/span><\/em> because you already know lots of C2 vocabulary, you might go for that one! <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Above all, you need to feel prepared. That means understanding a task, planning effectively and having some CPE secret weapons <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>at your disposal<\/strong><\/span><\/em>.  By the end of this blog, you\u2019ll know what a typical Cambridge C2 review question looks like, what to include in your plan, what grammar and vocabulary you could incorporate and how you can prepare for this part of the C2 Proficiency writing exam. Let\u2019s start with the basics!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>What is a review? <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgeenglish.org\/exams-and-tests\/proficiency\/exam-format\/\">Cambridge C2 Proficiency exam page<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/C2-Proficiency-exam-page.png\" alt=\"C2 Proficiency exam page\" width=\"530\" height=\"220\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/C2-Proficiency-exam-page.png 530w, https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/C2-Proficiency-exam-page-300x125.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">The review is one of six options you can choose from in the C2 Proficiency Writing paper Part 2, along with the mandatory essay that you\u2019ll complete in Part 1, which we covered in our <a href=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/en\/guide-to-the-cambridge-c2-proficiency-writing-exam-part-1-essay\/\">Guide to the Cambridge C2 Proficiency Writing Exam \u2013 Part 1: Essay<\/a> blog post. Keep your eyes peeled for blogs about the rest!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>Review format<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"list_styles\"><ul class=''>\n<span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li><i class='icon-ok'><\/i>Word count: 280\u2013320.<\/li>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li><i class='icon-ok'><\/i>Register: neutral \u2013 it depends on the target reader.<\/li>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li><i class='icon-ok'><\/i>Main purpose: describe, evaluate, recommend, suggest.<\/li>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li><i class='icon-ok'><\/i>General structure: title, introduction to the topic, three main paragraphs \u2013 one to describe, one to discuss in more detail, one to recommend.<\/li>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li><i class='icon-ok'><\/i>Common themes: films, books, restaurants, art, festivals, concerts.<\/li>\n<\/span>\n<\/ul><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>Why choose the review task?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">One of the main reasons a lot of students feel comfortable writing reviews is because we use them so often in everyday life. That is to say, we prefer to check opinions before committing to a product or an event. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">However, it\u2019s not as simple as giving stars! We need to make sure our writing is upgraded to C2 level. <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Check out<\/strong><\/span><\/em> the table below for examples of upgraded language. We\u2019ve used four different review topics. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Review-task.png\" alt=\"Review task\" width=\"633\" height=\"404\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Review-task.png 633w, https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Review-task-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 633px) 100vw, 633px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">We\u2019ve used two techniques here:  In <span style=\"color: #FF0000;\"><strong>red<\/strong><\/span>, you can see examples of <span style=\"color: #FF0000;\">pseudo-cleft sentences<\/span>. In <span style=\"color: #0000FF;\"><strong>blue<\/strong><\/span>, you can see examples of <span style=\"color: #0000FF;\">negative inversions<\/span>. We\u2019ve highlighted a nice <span style=\"color: #FF00FF;\">phrasal verb<\/span> in <span style=\"color: #FF00FF;\"><strong>pink<\/strong><\/span>, and you can see lots of <u>underlined examples of descriptive language<\/u>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">However, it\u2019s important to use these <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>sparingly<\/strong><\/span><\/em>. In other words, use your planning stage to decide where you\u2019re going to use them or your writing can seem too formal. Remember, you\u2019re writing to convince someone, so you want to communicate on their level.  Don\u2019t <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>go overboard<\/strong><\/span><\/em>!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>How can I structure a review?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">First, let\u2019s look at a review task. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/How-can-I-structure-a-review.png\" alt=\"How can I structure a review\" width=\"676\" height=\"120\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/How-can-I-structure-a-review.png 676w, https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/How-can-I-structure-a-review-300x53.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">As the task asks you to do three things: describe the book you enjoyed, talk about the attractions it had for you as a child and explain why it\u2019s relevant today, you\u2019d probably want three paragraphs. Add a fourth for a short conclusion and you have your general structure. Your title can be the name of the book. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">You should <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>allocate<\/strong><\/span><\/em> at least 15 minutes to your plan. Think carefully about what you want to write about and how you can explain your ideas. Make a list of useful collocations connected to the topic. Then, think about how you can use excellent examples of C2 grammar. Plan how you\u2019re going to connect your ideas with linkers. Vary your sentence structure and occasionally add a much shorter sentence in order to add emphasis. It really works!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">Remember, your writing needs to have cohesion. The more time you spend planning, the more you can work on the structure. Try to visualise your paragraphs as rectangles. Within these rectangles there are smaller rectangles that vary in size and shape. Imagine that you have to decide on the perfect order and distribution. As a result, your paragraph will be stronger. <\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>What does a review look like?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/What-does-a-review-look-like.png\" alt=\"What does a review look like\" width=\"507\" height=\"467\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/What-does-a-review-look-like.png 507w, https:\/\/oxfordhousebcn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/What-does-a-review-look-like-300x276.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 507px) 100vw, 507px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">First, the writer introduces the topic of the review. This helps the reader know what he\/she <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>is about to<\/strong><\/span><\/em> read. Next, the writer gives a brief description of the story. No spoilers please! In the third paragraph, the writer comments on how the story is relevant today. To conclude, he\/she links back to the original introduction and summarises the entire review in one <em><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>neat<\/strong><\/span><\/em> little paragraph. Beautiful! <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 15px;\">We\u2019ve also highlighted some lovely collocations which are appropriate for this task about children&#8217;s books. You\u2019ll find lots more inspiration for your reviews on sites like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/?ref=nav_home\">Goodreads<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/\">Metacritic<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/food\/restaurants+tone\/reviews\">The Guardian<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/\">Rolling Stone<\/a>. <\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"color: #2d346f;\"><strong>What else can I do?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"list_styles\"><ul class=''>\n<span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><li><i class='icon-ok'><\/i>Practise!
